Charles Town: Celebrated its 200th birthday with a
three-day event beginning on West Virginia Day, June 20, 1986.
Originally chartered in 1786 and named for Charles Washington,
brother of the first president, who erected here his home,
"Happy Retreat." Scene of trial and execution of John
Brown, famous abolitionist. Of three treason trials in United
States history, two were tried in courthouse here. Home of William
L. Wilson, who, in 1896, while Postmaster General in President
Cleveland's cabinet established between Charles Town, Uvilla and
Halltown the first rural free delivery service in America. Near
here, at "Harewood," home of Samuel Washington, another
brother of George Washington, Dolly Payne Todd was married to
James Madison, later President of the United States.
