Grafton: Originally chartered in 1856 and named in honor of John Grafton, a civil engineer in the employment of Colonel Benjamin Latrobe, who laid out the route of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1852 across what was then northwestern Virginia. Home Rule City. Only national cemetery in West Virginia (1,800 graves) is located here. Monument to the first soldier killed in the Civil War. Birthplace of Anna Jarvis, founder of Mother's Day and site of the international Mother's Day was observed. Mother's Day Church, (Andrews Methodist Church).
