Philippi: Originally chartered in 1844 and named for
Phillip Pendleton Barbour, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
of the United States, 1836-1841. Incorporated by Act of the
Legislature, February 22, 1905. Here was fought the first battle
of the Civil War, the Federal troops on June 3, 1861, commanded by
General B. F. Kelly, surprising Colonel George A. Porterfield.
