Logan County
The first settlers came to Logan county around 1794. The county was created in 1824 from parts of Cabell, Giles, Kanawha and Tazwell counties and named for Logan, chief of the Mingo tribe.

The area grew very slowly the first 100 years because transportation in the region was so poor.

Huge coal deposits in the region encouraged the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroads to develop a network of lines in the region around 1900.

Coal production soon made the region a boom area. Coal production swelled to more than 19 million tons in 1950, the population grew along with the mining, with more than 77,000 people living in the county in 1950.

Today the coal production is less than half of the peak rate and the population has dropped to around 37,000 people.

On February 25, 1972 a dam constructed from the waste of coal mining broke and flooded homes in the Buffalo Creek area. The resulting flood killed 118 people.
