Pendleton County

Three large mountain ridges trisect Pendleton county, creating, at 4,860, the highest point in the state.

Pendleton County was formed in 1788 from pasts Augusta, Hardy, and Rockingham counties, and is named for Edmund Pendleton, who was a Virginia statesman,

The area has always been predominantly agricultural. The lack of any rail line hampered industrial growth. The cutting of timber is a large business in the area, which much of it being trucked to out of the area mills.

A large area of the county is used for public lands. The Shenandoah National Forest is located in the eastern section of the county and the Monongahela National forest is located in the western portion of the county.

The county is also home to Seneca Rocks, the Smoke Hole and Seneca Caverns, as well as several other limestone caves.
