Pocahontas County

Located in the east-central part of the state, the county is very mountainous with peaks reaching 4,500 feet.

A total of eight rivers have their headwaters in the county. The Greenbrier, Shaver's Fork of the Cheat, The Tygart Valley, the Williams, the Cherry, the Cranberry, the Gauley and the Elk all start in Pocahontas County.

The county was created in 1821 from parts of of Bath, Randolph and Pendleton counties and is named for the Indian princess who saved the life of Captain John Smith.

During the Civil War more than 9,000 troops engaged in he battle of Droop mountain. The battle site is now a state park.

Once heavily timbered, more than half of county is now publicly own including land within the Monongahela National Forest.

Several radio telescopes operate in the county. Nearby mountains shield them from harmful radio waves.
