Wyoming County The Mingo, Shawnee and Wyandotte Indians once used the Wyoming County area for hunting. The first white settlers moved into the area in 1799. The county was created in 1799 from a section of Logan County. It wasn't until the establishment of rail lines in the area in 1912 that the great coal reserves in the area could be mined. Coal remains a major business in the county today. Pineville, the county seat, was established in 1907 and is named for the pine forest that was in the area.
