Preston County Preston County was formed in 1818 from Monongalia County and named in honor of James Peyton Preston, a governor of Virginia from 1816-1818. The development of a rail line in the county in the 1850s spurred development and allowed a way to transport coal and lumber. Coal mining remains an important business in the county today.
