UNION HISTORIC DISTRICT - first settled in 1774 and established as the county seat in 1799. Walking tour exhibits several antebellum homes and churches. Excellent museum on main street operated by the Monroe County Historical Society.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL - the famous Maine-to-Georgia footpath follows the crest of Peters Mountain above the farm, making Monroe County one of only two counties in West Virginia which can claim a portion of the trail. Access entrance can be found off Wilson Mill Road in Lindside.

SALTPETER CAVES - Saltpeter was mined from these caverns for the manufacture of gunpowder during the previous century. Wagon ruts are still visible in the dry, undisturbed cave floor. Tours may be available on a limited basis. Contact the Institute for Earth Education, 304-832-6404.

MONCOVE LAKE STATE PARK - The lake, in a remote section of the county formerly known as Devil's Hollow, offers fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and picnicking in a serene, peaceful setting.

MONROE COUNTY'S SCENIC BYWAYS - Farm Heritage Road and Mountain Shadow Trail offer three distinct geographical settings. Farm Heritage Road winds the course of Indian Creek from gently rolling plateaus of farmland to picturesque Sweet Springs Valley. The Mountain Shadow Trail carries the same theme and character, though in a slightly more rugged fashion. A comprehensive brochure is available from the tourism bureau.

OLD REHOBOTH CHURCH, Rt. 3 outside Union. Reported to be the oldest church building in the Virginias, west of the Shenandoah Valley. The small log structure was erected in 1786 and remains, though now covered by a protective shed roof. A museum is also operated on the site.

HANGING ROCK OBSERVATORY - situated atop Peters Mountain near Zenith. The site was once manned as a fire observation post for the Jefferson National Forest. Now used by hawk watchers to observe migrations in the autumn, the vantage point rests at an elevation of 3,812 feet, nearly 2,000 feet above the valley floors below. The lookout offers an outstanding panorama of Monroe County, and on clear days, views can extend well into Mercer, Summers, and Greenbrier counties in West Virginia, and Allegheny, Craig, Roanoke, and Giles counties in Virginia. The observatory is reached via a 40 minute walk along the Allegheny Trail from the mountaintop parking log along Monroe County 15, approximately 3 miles from the backway. Let's take a tour. The top floor has been remodeled into a dance and yoga studio - an intimate performance venue, a meeting/reception space and for art exhibits.  This room and the accompanying Green Room with modest kitchen facilities are available for rent.

The ground floor houses the Monroe Gallery and Yesterday's Thrift Shop.

The basement is nearing completion and will be used for pottery, glass and other art classes.  Check our

WOLF CREEK WINERY, HC 75 Box 36 A, Wolfcreek, WV 24993  304-772-5040 wines@wolfcreekwinerywv.com

Winery is located on a beautiful spot with a great view of the Vineyard and the surrounding mountains. The building houses the Tasting Room, a kitchen and the office. The actual wine-making is done on the lower floor and includes our lab, barrel room and main room with the 400 gallon stainless steel tanks in which the carefully pressed grape juice turns to wine. Here, the humidity and temperature are controlled to optimize conditions for fermentation and finishing, making it a cool place to be in the heat of summer.

Vineyard is a modest 7 acres on a gentle hillside in Wolfcreek, West Virginia. We view ourselves as small-farmers first, and believe that the vineyard is where we do our most important work. We started planting in 1991 and the vineyard is now firmly established with four basic varieties of grapes: Seyval, Vidal, Chambourcin and Foch. We are currently planting 5 more acres to introduce other varieties and increase our output to meet demand.

Tasting Room is on the first floor of the Winery and has a good view of the Vineyard out its many windows and from the adjoining deck. This intimate atmosphere is well-suited for conversation, some cheese & crackers and sampling our fine wines.
Open April – December on Friday, Saturday from 12:00noon – 6:00pm and Sunday 1:00 – 5:00pm. (304) 772-5040. MasterCard, Visa accepted
