The city of Benwood will host its own celebration to commemorate West Virginia's 150th birthday this week.
Fireworks, food and entertainment all will be a part of the event, set for Saturday in the A&B Kia plaza. Amusement rides for children will be set up in the lot and will open at 2 p.m. Matt Van Fossen performs at 7 p.m., followed by a fireworks show at 10 p.m.
And at least 400 hot dogs will be available throughout the evening, according to Police Chief Frank Longwell.
Organized by the city of Benwood, the event is sponsored by A&B Kia and Main Street Bank.
"Every year we do an American sale and celebration," said Roger Wood, general manager of A&B Kia.
"This year, (Benwood leaders) asked us if we could do something to help the city celebrate West Virginia's 150th birthday, and we decided to move up our event to connect with the 150th."
Main Street Bank is helping with the expenses, Longwell said.
"The city is grateful to be associated with A&B Kia and Main Street Bank," he said. "They will put on a sizable fireworks show comparable to Wheeling's."
